Sustainable Chemicals™ LLC
Where Science and innovation meet environmental stewards
At Sust-Chem™, we seek to bring new materials to market that will have a positive environmental impact. Our ambitious goal is to have a global reach into bringing sustainable bioplastics to producers and consumers in the plastics industry.
OUR MISSION IS TO SOLVE THE PLASTIC PROBLEM
″Bioplastics have been around for decades, but the technology remains limited to niche applications because they have inferior properties and are more expensive than traditional plastics. The only way to achieve meaningful environmental change is to design a bioplastic that is cost and performance competitive with petroleum-based plastics. That is why I founded Sustainable Chemicals™.″
– Silvia Luebben, Sust-Chem CEO and Founder
Sustainable Polymer
We are developing a family of bioplastics made from a raw material that is obtained from biomass. This reduces the carbon footprint of our product by 75% compared to petrochemical plastics.
Degradation
If dispersed in the environment, Sust-Chem’s bioplastics degrade into benign molecules that can be used by nature as building blocks.
If collected, our polymers can be mechanically or chemically recycled.
Cost-competitive
Petrochemical plastics are ubiquitous because they are convenient and cheap. Our materials are made from raw materials that are cost-competitive with the petrochemical ones.
Mechanical Properties
We designed our bioplastics to have properties on par with or better than conventional petrochemical plastics.
We Have the Power to Impact Our Future, and We’re Doing Something About It
We are drowning in plastic pollution.
- By the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish .
- Non-biodegradable plastics breakdown into smaller fragments, called microplastics, which enter our drinking water and food supply. Each person consumes about half a pound of microplastics per year.
- Plastic manufacture and incineration accounts for 13% of global carbon dioxide emissions, a leading cause of global warming.
- Only 9% of plastic is actually recycled.
- Current alternatives to conventional polymers have made great technological advances, however their used is limited to niche applications because their cost is higher and their performance in inferior to that of conventional fossil fuel based plastics.
OUR OBJECTIVE
Bring to market a family of sustainable bioplastics than can compete with petrochemical plastics in cost, performance and volume.
BIODEGRADABLE
Our material has a benign end of life whether it is recycled, up-cycled or lost to the environment.
RENEWABLE
The monomer is sourced from biomass which allows us to reduce the carbon footprint of our plastics by 75%.
NONPERSISTANT
Our plastic breaks down into benign materials if improperly disposed.
NONTOXIC
The monomer is present in soy sauce and has a natural metabolic pathway.
PROPERTIES
Mechanical properties of the polymer are similar to conventional plastics.
