The Plastic Pollution Crisis
In almost every industry, plastic is a crucial component to providing a reliable and affordable products and services. In fact, in 2019 plastic production increased to nearly 1.4 million tons of plastic per day. Unfortunately, conventional plastic does not break down in the environment. To date, recycling is expensive, can be ineffective, and there are difficulties keeping the waste stream pure. This means that a large amount of new plastic is accumulating in our landfills, and worse – our ecosystems, oceans, and even our bodies in the form of microplastics.
LEARN MORE
- Plastic is made from our ever-depleting supply of fossil fuels. By 2050, plastic production will account for 20% of global oil consumption.
- On average, an individual consumes one tablespoon of microplastics each week. Microplastics are toxic and have been associated with a variety of health issues including …
- By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.
- Plastic production will make up 13% of global CO2 emissions by 2050, making it a leading driver of climate change.
- Less than 9% of plastic is recycled in the United States.
Our Solution: A Novel Renewable, Biodegradable Bioplastic
Sustainable Chemicals™ has pioneered a process to create a new renewable, biodegradable bioplastic. Our plastic comes from plant biomass, and at the end of its lifecycle, will return to the Earth without causing harm to our bodies or ecosystems along the way. Best of all, our plastic uses a raw material that is cheaper than that of its petrochemical competitors – polyethylene and polypropylene.
LEARN MORE
- Our bioplastic uses a cost competitive biomonomer that is produced in mass volumes.
- Our plastic has tunable mechanical properties to fit a variety of market needs.
- Our bioplastic will replace both amorphous (soft and flexible) plastics such as plastic bags and semi-crystalline (rigid) plastics such as plastic containers.
- Unlike conventional petroleum-based plastics, our plastic has a variety of end of life options, none of which harm the environment.
- Our plastic is chemically recyclable and can be depolymerized recover the monomer – allowing for a circular economy.
- Our plastic is degradable. This means that if it ends up in landfills or is accidentally dispersed into ecosystems or waterways, our plastic will degrade into its natural, nonharmful components.

The Benefits: A Greener World

If Sustainable Chemical’s bioplastic reaches global scale, we could:
- Reduce CO2 emissions by up to 800 million metric tons per year.
- Reduce the accumulation of toxic microplastics in the environment by 23%.
- Decrease the addition to ocean pollution by 11%.
